Nothing but or except

Hi Everyone,
I'm in two minds about the use of "but" or "except"
e.g. There was nothing Brain could do but/except leave the country.
My choice:except (but not sure if it is grammatically correct.
Thank you in advance

    @Nhenglish, for me
    both
    There was nothing Brain could do but leave the country.
    and
    There was nothing Brain could do except leave the country.
    are acceptable.

    I have a slight preference for but.
    But this is because I prefer the sound. I like the rhythm better.

    Before a NOUN, I think nothing but is clearly better in most cases.
