Which is the right preposition here: recline on/in?

He was reclining on a chair.
He was reclining in a chair.

Which of these sentences uses the right preposition? Please mention the reason as well.

    I don't think recline is the right verb.
    My best suggestion is lie back.
    The choice of preposition would depend on the shape of the chair.

  • Becaus of the shape of a chair. You recline on something long such as a sofa, a couch, a bed, the ground etc.
