Dashes and hyphens

What is British English usage when it comes to hyphens and en and em dashes?

Frankly, I have not been aware of the difference between the en dash and the hyphen before today! Can the en dash legitimately be represented by or replaced with a hyphen?

I am confused when it comes to compound adjectives.
