Infinitive as an object

Hi
In the sentence "I wanted him to leave the room" what is the role of infinitive "to leave"?
Is it an object?

The OBJECT of the sentence is him to leave the room.
This has its own clause-like structure — in fact modern grammars call it a NON-FINITE CLAUSE.

I think the best way to look at it is

    UPPER CLAUSE
    SUBJECT....VERB..........OBJECT
    I................wanted........him to leave the room

    LOWER CLAUSE
    ....................................SUBJECT....VERB........OBJECT
    ....................................him.............to leave....the room

The UPPER CLAUSE is FINITE — wanted is a finite verb form.
The LOWER CLAUSE is NON-FINITE — to leave is a non-finite verb form.
