Third personal plural pronoun with singular antecedent

Has anyone any views on if/when it is appropriate/acceptable to use such pronouns (like they and their) with a singular antecedent?

  • Almost always. There are many examples in the King James Bible. A text has to be extremely formal in style before you need to think about avoiding they/them/their.

  • Thanks for your reply, @DavidCrosbie . I guess one reason to avoid them would be that some people have very passionately held views that such usage is incorrect. It seems to be a bit of a hot-potato issue.
